Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2: First impressions after the update

Fortnite Chapter 7 Showdown

I've been playing Fortnite on and off since Chapter 1. Sometimes I'm obsessed, sometimes I forget it exists for months. The new season dropped today, and after 20+ matches, here's where I'm at.

The new season dropped today

Chapter 7 Season 2 (they're calling it "Showdown") went live this morning after servers were down for maintenance. I had the update pre-loaded last night, so I was ready to jump in as soon as it launched at 7 AM ET.

First match? Landed hot, died in 3 minutes. Classic.

What's new (that I've noticed so far)

The map changed quite a bit. There's a new area with what looks like Ice King's castle – pretty cool if you've been playing long enough to remember him. I haven't explored everything yet, but it feels fresh.

New weapons too. Found a couple of things I didn't recognize, but I'm still figuring out what's good. The Toggle Zoom DMR from last season is still around, which is fine by me.

Oh, and they added new Reality Augments. Saw one called "Marksman Headshots" that increases headshot damage with marksman rifles. Might be useful if you're better at aiming than I am.

The V-Bucks situation (everyone's talking about this)

So apparently Epic changed how V-Bucks work – you get fewer in the Battle Pass now, and prices went up. I didn't even notice at first because I don't pay that much attention, but Reddit is losing its mind.

Some people are saying they'll skip next season's Battle Pass in protest. I get it, but honestly? I've been playing long enough to remember when Battle Pass was new and exciting. The increase is annoying, but not enough to make me quit.

Epic's explanation was basically "costs went up, we need to raise prices". Blunt, at least. No corporate BS. But yeah, not great timing with everything else going on.

Anyway — a friend showed me this thing for getting V-Bucks a bit cheaper. Been using it for a while, works okay. Figured I'd share in case you're tired of paying full price.

The meta feels… weird

I'm not good enough to really analyze the meta properly. But I can tell something's different. My usual landing spots aren't where I remember them. Weapon spawns feel shuffled.

Also, I swear the building mechanic is slightly different? Or maybe I'm just rusty. I've been playing more Zero Build lately because I'm tired of getting out-built by people who edit faster than I can blink.

Speaking of Zero Build – it's still there, still fun. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot. Way more chill.

The collaborations are getting ridiculous

Last season we had Ice Spice as a skin and NPC. Now apparently there's a Bugs Bunny skin in the new Battle Pass. I'm not making this up.

Fortnite is basically "the game where anyone can show up" at this point. Batman, Harry Potter, Kim Kardashian, and now Bugs Bunny. It's chaos, but honestly? Kinda fun chaos.

What I don't like so far

  • The sweats are back. First day of new season, and I'm already getting eliminated by people who play 12 hours a day. Matchmaking could be kinder.
  • Too many bots in casual. I get why they do it, but winning against bots doesn't feel like winning.
  • The item shop spam. Every time I log in, there's a new $20 skin. I just want to play the game, not feel like I'm missing out.

What I actually like

  • The map changes are solid. Feels new without being completely unrecognizable.
  • Zero Build exists. Thank you, Epic, for giving us a casual option.
  • The chaos is still fun. Even when I lose, Fortnite is usually entertaining.

Should you play in 2026?

If you've never played? Yeah, give it a shot. It's free, it's polished, and there's a reason it's still one of the biggest games in the world.

If you're an old player coming back? Be prepared for things to feel different. The game changed. A lot. But if you go in with an open mind, you might still find something you enjoy.

I'll probably play for a few weeks, get bored, take a break, then come back next season. That's just how it goes with Fortnite.

Look, I'm not a pro. I have like 300 hours in this game total, which is nothing compared to the people who treat it like a job. These are just my thoughts after a day with the new season. Take them for what they're worth.

P.S. If you've found a good landing spot already, let me know. I keep dying in the first 5 minutes.
