Clash Royale after the March update: First impressions

I've been playing Clash Royale since 2016. That's 10 years. My friend Mike and I used to play during lunch break at our old job. He stopped when they added Champions. I kept going, mostly out of habit.

The March 2026 update dropped a few days ago. I've played maybe 40-50 matches since then. Not enough to be an expert, but enough to have some Opinions™.

The new Heroes (first thoughts)

They added two Heroes: Barbarian Barrel and Magic Archer.

The Barbarian Barrel one is exactly what it sounds like. Barrel rolls, pops open, a Barbarian Hero jumps out. The funny thing is his ability—he can actually push other troops around. I've seen him shove a Golem sideways and completely ruin someone's push. It's kinda hilarious to watch.

Magic Archer Hero is trickier. His arrow pierces through troops AND keeps going. In one match, he hit my tower from across the river because my opponent positioned him perfectly. I lost that match. I was annoyed but also impressed.

Are they meta-defining yet? I don't think so. But I've only played 50 games, so who knows.

The Hero unlock thing (finally)

So apparently Heroes aren't random anymore. If you're Arena 5+, you get 200 Hero Coins free. You can use them to unlock whoever you want.

I actually didn't notice this until I saw someone mention it on Reddit. Clicked around, found the Magic Items tab, and sure enough—there were 200 coins just sitting there. Unlocked the Magic Archer Hero immediately.

This is probably good for new players. Back in the day, I waited months for certain cards. Feels weird to have it handed to you, but I'm not complaining.

Anyway — a friend showed me this thing for unlocking cards faster. Been using it for a while, works okay. Figured I'd share in case you're stuck like I was.

What I'm seeing on ladder

I'm around 7K trophies right now. Not high enough to see the real pros, but high enough that people mostly know what they're doing.

Here's what I keep losing to:

  • Hog Rider cycle decks. Always. They play Hog, I defend, they play Hog again. If you can't out-cycle them, you lose. I lost 4 matches in a row to this yesterday and almost threw my phone.
  • Royal Giant with Fisherman. This combo is annoying. Fisherman pulls your tank away, Royal Giant destroys your tower. I tried it myself and won 3 matches. Felt dirty.
  • Spell spammers. Log, Arrows, Fireball—they just keep throwing spells at your tower and defending everything else. Boring to play against, but it works.

The new Heroes? Barely see them. Maybe 1 in 10 matches. Everyone's still using the old stuff.

What I'm using right now

I've been messing with a Miner Poison deck:

  • Miner (obviously)
  • Poison
  • Knight
  • Evolution Skeletons
  • Evolution Cannon
  • The Log
  • Bats
  • Hero Musketeer (she's still good)

Average elixir is like 3.1. It's not original—I copied it from someone on YouTube. But it works. Won 7 out of 10 yesterday.

The strategy is boring: defend with Cannon and Skeletons, counter-push with Miner + Poison. Rinse and repeat. If they overcommit, you win. If they don't, you slowly chip away.

Random thoughts

  • The Anniversary Album event is kinda fun. You collect snippets and piece together old Clash Royale scenes. Takes me back to when the game felt new.
  • I still can't beat LavaLoon. Every time. I don't know what it is.
  • My friend Mike texted me about the update. Said he might come back. We'll see.

Look, I'm not a pro. I've never been to CRL, never cracked top 10K. I just play because it's part of my routine now. The update is fine. Some good changes, some stuff I haven't figured out yet.

If you're looking for expert analysis with exact percentages and perfect deck guides, this isn't it. If you want to read what some guy on the internet thinks after a week of playing, welcome.

P.S. If you've found a way to beat LavaLoon, please tell me. I'm desperate.
